Why "Pathetic Loser"?
Back in the Usenet days, the strip-club regulars of alt.sex.strip-clubs made one San Francisco club their HQ. Around 1996 a dancer there tried to privately vent to another dancer: the internet guys were "pathetic losers", but she needed their money, so she had to be nice.
She hit send to the whole group instead. The guys thought it was the funniest thing ever, and strip-club regulars have proudly called themselves PLs for three decades since.
